Internships

Build the foundation for your journalism career with us through our news internships.

The AP's news internships are paid and highly selective 12-week programs, meant to provide individually tailored training for students aspiring to be cross-format journalists.

Internships are open to U.S. and international students as well as recent graduates.

Applicants must be either:

  • Current full-time students within two years of earning an undergraduate degree (juniors and seniors only) or
  • Current full-time graduate students or
  • Students who will graduate December 2018 or later

Global News General Assignment Internship

Our Global News General Assignment Internship program selects 13 interns to be assigned to an AP bureau under the supervision of a designated trainer. They cover breaking news and complete a final, multi-format enterprise project that may be featured in media outlets around the world.

In the U.S., internships are available in the following bureaus: Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. 

Internationally, internships are available in the following bureaus: Bangkok, Berlin, Jerusalem, London (with emphasis on video), New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, Rome and Tokyo.

Business, Entertainment, Health and Science, Sports Internships

The Business, Entertainment, Sports Health and Science Internship program selects an intern in each category to be assigned to an AP bureau or department under the supervision of a designated trainer. Interns cover news in business, entertainment, sports, or health and science and complete a final, multi-format enterprise project that may be featured in media outlets around the world.

The business news internship is available in Washington, D.C.; the entertainment news internship is available in Los Angeles; and the sports and health and science news internships are available in New York.

Photography/Video Internship

Reporting responsibilities for the photography/video intern will include conducting interviews, monitoring and using social media to find stories and to promote AP’s content, tracking down user-generated content and covering breaking news stories. The internship is available in Chicago and Mexico City.

Data Journalist Internship

One of the key responsibilities of the data journalist intern will be to assist with the preparation of the data sets behind AP's national stories for distribution. The intern will also help AP members and customers discover their own local stories in the data. The internship is available in Washington, D.C. 

Editing/Reporting Internship

An editing/reporting internship is available on the East Region Desk in New York through a partnership with the Dow Jones News Fund that will provide a week of training before the internship begins. The intern’s primary responsibility is to edit content and write headlines for a 10-state region as well as report for the New York City bureau.
